Mariia Vladymyrova delivers a lecture at the U.S. Naval War College
December 9, 2024
Mariia Vladymyrova is a visiting research scholar at Stockton Center for International Law at the U.S. Naval War College from November 2024 to February 2025. During her stay in Newport, she delivered a guest lecture on competing coastal claims in the Black and Azov Seas and lawfare in Russo-Ukrainian war for the elective course “Maritime Security Law,” taught by the Stockton Center team.
Lawfare is one of the most eminent challenges in today’s warfare – as strategic leveraging of legal frameworks, it serves to consolidate the narratives of won legitimacy and to deter opponents from making use of their legal rights. Russia has long set its track in lawfare tactics. In her PhD project, Mariia studies how lawfare has become integral to the Russian strategy and practice of deterrence at sea.
