Ritual Deterrence joins 2023 UK DAAA conference

On 14-16 November 2023 Prof. Maria Mälksoo and PhD fellow Mariia Vladymyrova joined the annual conference of the 2023 UK Deterrence and Assurance Alliance. Co-hosted by the UK Defence Science and Technology Laboratory and the Scottish Council on Global Affairs, the conference took place in Edinburgh’s Queen Elizabeth House and brought together academics and practitioners from across Atlantic to address evolving challenges and the future of deterrence and research thereof.

The team took part in the panel on strategic culture. Mariia Vladymyrova presented a case study of Russia’s fisheries in the European North as a grey zone deterrence practice, and Prof. Maria Mälksoo presented findings underpinning her forthcoming article for International Affairs on evolution of NATO’s engagement at its eastern flank. The research presented sparked a great interest in the DAAA community.

The reception at the Great Hall of Edinburgh Castle upon the kind invitation of the governor, Sir Alastair Bruce of Crionaich, was a great and festive addition to the conference programme.
