Ritual Deterrence Team Presents at the EISA PEC2024 in Lille

Ritual Deterrence team presented work in progress at the European International Studies Association’s 17th Pan-European Conference on International Relations at the Université Catholique de Lille in France on 28-31 August 2024. The project-convened panel on ‘Rituals in International Politics’ featured papers by Maria Mälksoo (‘The Logic of Ritual Action as the Logic of Deterrence’) and Thomas Fraise (‘Wizards of Armageddon?  Magic, Rituals, and the Epistemic Authority of Nuclear Experts’), alongside the contributions from the project advisory board members and contributors to the special issue in the making.

Maria Mälksoo further participated in the special session dedicated to the 10-year anniversary of the association, chaired a panel on ‘Anxiety and ontological insecurity in the shadow of the Russian-Ukrainian war’ and discussed two books at the dedicated roundtables (‘Peace and the Politics of Memory’ and ‘The Grammar of Status Competition: International Hierarchies and Domestic Politics’). Thomas Fraise also presented a paper ‘”Security” and the critical zone: why critical security studies needs to “get down to Earth” at the panel on ‘The Frontiers and Rise of Authoritarianism in the Critical Zone’.
